Summer Bridge

A Message From Our Principle Dr. Muhammad

To Whom It May Concern:

Greetings, I hope all is well. We will be holding a Freshman Orientation program on Saturday, June 17, 2023 at 10:00 a.m. I look forward to meeting all of you. Prior to the orientation, there are a number of important issues you should know.

Summer Bridge Program: The purpose of the program is designed to make sure the incoming scholars are acclimated to the culture and climate of Bedford Academy, develop long-term and short-term goals, acquire at least (1 to 2) credits, engage in diagnostic and post-diagnostic examinations to determine growth and strengthen historical skills, analytical skills, mathematics competencies, and critical thinking skills.

Summer Bridge will operate on the following dates:

July 5, 2023 to July 31st

  • July 5, 2023 to July 31st
  • Monday through Friday
  • 9:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m.
  • Courses will include English, Math, and Participation in Government. In addition to workshops and seminars, scholars will attend classes at Long Island University, Brooklyn campus. The university is located at 1 University Plaza.

Uniform Policy: The basis of uniforms according to a 2016 article by Marian Wilde, outlines the following aspects that connect to schools:

  • Encourage discipline
  • Help students resist peer pressure to buy trendy clothes
  • Help identify intruders in the school
  • Diminish economic and social barriers between students
  • Increase a sense of belonging and school pride
    Improve attendance

(School uniforms do not have to be worn during Summer Bridge, however, ripped jeans, open-toe shoes, sandals, slippers, sliders, undershirts, tights, and revealing clothes cannot be worn, scholars will be sent home if they are wearing the previously mentioned items)

Freshman Class Schedules: Freshman class schedules usually are based in part on what milestones they accomplished during their time in middle school. If your child took and met the college and career index for Algebra they will be placed in either Geometry or Trigonometry. Ninth-grade scholars will also be placed in Earth Science, Chemistry, or Environmental Science if they took and passed Living Environment and or Earth Science. Additionally, scholars will be placed into a United States History course in the fall. In addition, all freshman scholars take MBK (My Brother's Keeper) and MSK (My Sister's Keeper) classes, which are elective courses. It is important that you share your child's middle school regent's grades with Bedford Academy as soon as possible. Student programs, will be distributed on September 7, 2023, which is the first day of school.

College Dual Credit Program: Based on the scholar's success in the Summer Bridge Program, freshman scholars will have the opportunity to take our dual credit programs at Monroe College and Touro University. In addition, the scholars may take AP courses in their freshman year as well.
